Memories of
William Green "Bill" Dudney
By B. G. Thornton
Bill Dudney was a good friend to me especially during our high
school years. I always referred to him as my high school “Best
Friend.”
We met at the beginning of 10th grade. He was from Washington
and attended Hope High (grades 9 thru 12). I was from Ozan
and attended Washington High in 9th grade; then transferred to
Hope for grades 10 through 12.
After we became friends, he would drive to Ozan (6 miles each
way–12 miles round trip) to pick me up and then take me back to
make sure I was included in our Hope High School functions. I
would not have been able to attend except for his friendship. I
shall never forget that. We remained friends over the years.
Later my wife and I visited in their home in Hyattsville, MD in
1963 and he visited us in our home in Texarkana--probably early
70s.
In 1963 while living in Falls Church, VA, I worked for the Bureau
of Public Roads (now Federal Highway Administration) and he
worked for a coal company, I believe. As I recall, he was just
graduating in Accounting. At the time, our agency (BPR) was
hiring auditors because of the Interstate Highway Program that
was underway. Got him to apply and our agency hired him! He
ultimately moved to N.C. and/or transferred to the ATF (Alcohol,
Tobacco, Firearms Agency) where he eventually retired.
We stayed in contact over the years. I talked to him last year (our
59th) and asked him if he were going to be able to attend. He told
me he would not be able to. Then I asked him about the
following year at our “big” one. He assured me he was going to
try to make it in 2013.
I will miss him at our 60th.
