HHS Classmates meet in Korea
Memories of Pat Mosley
During our public school days at Old Hope High School, many of us picked up
nicknames. Mine was "Buddy" and later on in high school it was "Bloke." Pat
Mosley was no different from the rest of us and I remember his nickname was
"Drak." I am pretty sure that Tom Ed Hays was the person that named Pat. It was
probably while a group of the guys played golf at the Hope Country Club. The guys
I remember playing were: Bobby, Jimmy, and Larry Bruce, Bert Chamberlain,
Donnell Bagley, Jesse Duke, Tom Ed Hays.
Lee P. and Tom Ed both moved to Hope, AR about the same time in 1949 while we
were attending the 8th grade at Oglesby Jr. High. Both of them became one of the
regular guys and we all spent a lot of quality time together during the next four years
at HHS. I was not a golfer myself but I did like to watch the guys play "cow-pasture
pool"-- as I called it--so I walked the golf course with them.
After our high school days, many of us decided to attend Southern State College at
Magnolia, AR to try to further our education. "Drak" and about 23 other guys (me
included) and girls from Hope, AR enrolled the fall semester of 1953-54 at SSC in
Magnolia, AR. Lee P. Mosley was a business major his freshman year. I checked
the SSC Mulerider Annual today and 10 of the 24 persons have now passed on to be
with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
"Drak," Pat or Lee P. has been on my mind a lot today and I have tried to recall the
last time I visited with him. I remember the last time to be shortly after I was
domiciled at Shrevesport, LA. as a criminal investigator for the U.S. Postal Service
in the early 1970's. I visited Pat at his home in Bossier City and we discussed our
time in the Army and how we happened to "hook up" in Korea.
This is my very special memory with Pat when he was stationed at Inchon Bay in the
U.S. Army near Seoul, Korea. He was operating one of the small boats that
transported GI's that were on their way back home after their tour of duty (16 months)
in Korea.
The great big ships had to park a long way out in the bay because of the heavy tide.
Somehow Pat had learned that I was one of those GI's on my way home via Japan to
the United States for discharge. Pat came to my area where we were lined up for
boarding and we had a great visit about our days at HHS and SSC. It is not every
day that anyone saw a friend from home--especially one as close as "Drak" and I
were. I had been in Korea for 14 months (two winters) and he was the first and only
Hope friend I had seen much less talked to. Pat had gone through a lot of effort to
spend those few moments of quality time with me. That assistance he gave to me
getting on the USS Mann Ship at Inchon Bay in March 1957 will never be forgotten!
Pat and I were also brothers in Christ Jesus from our early days at Hope, AR and
now he is with our Lord. I don't remember ever meeting his lovely wife Peggy and
his boys, Patrick and Chris, but I know they have to be special because they belong
to Lee P. "Drak" Mosley, a great friend to all his buddies at Hope, AR and Southern
State College. He is sorely missed by all of us.
